We’re trading films, photo galleries, articles, lists and some tank-topped Oklahoma nostalgia in exchange for raising money for both our sherpas and a documentary about our sherpas.
Per sherpas and Nepal, we’ll get into that at the end of this, as to keep focus on the Heartland. Speaking of, one could easily—and possibly has already—drawn the parallel of Oklahoma to its oil. Rich, historical and controversial, but all below the surface. You have to go looking for the good stuff. It ain’t on the surface. You see where I’m going with this.
And to even write about it feels fake—something I mentioned on the Rough Sundays episode I did on the Tulsa Sound—with me being the last person to be talking about something I ran from. And let’s not mince words, I bolted from Oklahoma as soon as I could. America as well. It was just never my thing. So to come back and produce stories always feels a bit, oh, I don’t know, not forced, but noticeably convenient, perhaps? Like the way I only bring up being raised poor and in a rough-ish neighborhood when it benefits the story. Not a fake, per se, but also not exactly genuine.
Let me tell you stories of the place I ran from!
That kind of thing.
Right.
But there are stories, and we get into a few.
-
A photo gallery trip down Route 66, from Tulsa to Edmond.
-
An article on HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON AT THE DENVER AIRPORT
-
A video tracing back the beginning of my Frank Lloyd Wright obsession to his designs here in Oklahoma—eventually leading me to the ruins of his old hotel in Japan. (Password: westhope)
-
Honoring the little 12 year-old me who never thought he’d leave Oklahoma.
-
Plus the travel gear you’ll need for this year’s adventures.
-
And the beginning of my Graphic Designer chapters, with me offering free designs for the next year to build up my book
… so let’s get you into the 918, the 405, and a few places in between.
Nepal. Sri Lanka. Japan. Oklahoma!
Again, we got jokes, but it’s always fun to put aside your childhood angst and appreciate where you came from.
But now we’re off again.
A plane back to Nepal.
Then another plane to Lukla.
Another hike up to Everest Base Camp.
Bananas, right?
And that’s what I’m raising money for this month. Money to buy Snickers to hand out as well as the film I’m wanting to make, as I’ll be shooting a lot of the sherpas going up and down, in hopes of turning the Snickers for Sherpas into a real documentary. This means studio time back in Kathmandu, post-production costs and maybe even a flight to grab an interview with Jamling Norgay—son of Tenzing Norgay, and now kind of a friend of mine.
I don’t mind raising money for a film.
This feels more noble than just supporting my own adventures.
And I’d like to get to that someday—making my money one way, and raising funds for films and/or gear and helping others along the way and things like that.
So yes—I’ll take whatever you got.
(For $100,000 I’ll name you the executive producer on the film. Just in case you had plenty of money but few titles.)
Anyway, talk to you from nearly the top of the world… I hope.
